Well-written article, my friend! I think for clarification, David Wolfe's position on this topic is that when at all possible, get your nutrients from food sources. A little bit of a different emphasis from "supplements", he suggests going with "superfoods" (as discussed in his book by the same title), since they often contain therapeutic dosages of various vitamins, minerals, or other essential phytonutrients. Best day ever to you all! :-)

Thanks! I appreciate that you read my article and wrote this post. I have read "Superfoods," great book. I have really enjoyed all the books of his that I read. When I saw him speak in Baltimore a couple months back (right when "Superfoods" came out) he was discussing the importance of Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D supplementation if you aren't able to get it from your foods.

Salt is a big one for me. I found this brief mention of salt cravings on Laura Bruno's blog: http://laurabruno.wordpress.com/2009/06/04/sugar-cravings-salt-and-minerals/ A little more than half way down she talks about sole [so-lay] which is a dilution of Himalayan crystal salt and water. My reading of it is that It is supposed to supply you with the minerals your body is wanting when you crave salt, but that are actually difficult for the body to extract. I've been taking it now for a couple of days [directions are here: http://www.himalayanlivingsalt.com/sole_prepare.htm ]

I have to say that it seems to be working for me and it's helping with the sugar cravings too - go figure!

Love the insight! Thanks for sharing!

I have always had a big problem with salt that is not raw. It took me awhile to figure it out but once I did it made a big difference. I found great Himalayan sea salt from Sustainable Sourcing https://secure.sustainablesourcing.com and have felt much better since we started using it. Amazing how even small changes can make a difference when you pay attention to your body.

Thanks for the info Jessica! It's much appreciated. xo

I know exactly what you mean. I avoid anything with sugar...even honey and maple syrup!

Honestly, I think eating what is right for yourself is first most important, that is why I think labeling yourself as vegetarian or vegan(to me) is unnecessary....unless it is for a social reason. Only because every person is different and food should be catered towards that individual's situation.

Well that is what i think anyways!=)

--------

I value everyone's thoughts! I always learn something :-) I think it's hard to label yourself because then you create all sorts of parameters that you need to live by. I just try to do what resonates the highest with me. Sometimes that means I stray from my preferred path (but it is just what I mentally prefer, not necessarily what's emotionally, physically or spiritually best for me at that time). Glad you found my blog and thanks for the comments! xo

(I didn't make a point of it, but vitamin D2 is vegan so it might be a viable consideration for those exceptions you listed above who also happen to wish to avoid animal ingredients. It probably is not as effective as animal-sourced D, but I did feel that it helped me. I always tell people that the sun! the sun! the sun! should be our first source...supplements are a very distant substitute.)

Thanks for the info and kind words!! Apparently I need to do more research! I had never heard that D3 was animal based! I do know that it is the best absorbed of the D vitamins! Oh well, I will do more research! (I love research!)

Hi,

I'm new to your blog, but I love it! I just thought I'd mention that D3 is animal-sourced, so for vegans like me and my family, it makes more sense to be ardent in our sun exposure. I just moved from Utah and I was often depressed in the winter there. This past winter I supplemented with vitamin D2 and focused on getting outside every time it was sunny (which is not very often, in the winter). I felt that my depression was much less significant. Now we live in NorCal and it's sunny all the time! Yeah! I always let my kids spend about 15 minutes in the sun before putting sunblock on them, and I try to stick with natural sunblocks that don't have nasty chemicals. Thanks for this post!
